HILGER CRYSTALS' LYSO SCINTILLATORS POWER PET SCANS
 
Cerium-doped Lutetium Yttrium Silicate, or LYSO(Ce), is a non-hygroscopic scintillation crystal that is broadly used high energy physics and nuclear medicine applications where high light yield, short decay time and excellent energy resolution are required.

Let's take a closer look at positron emission tomography (PET), a text-book example of how scintillators such as LYSO(Ce) work in the chart below. As the radiotracers injected into a body decay, they emit positrons, which react with electrons in the body and product photons. Crystals installed with the PET scanner scintillate as they detect these photons. And that scintillated light from the crystals is converted into an electrical signal that is imaged on the scanner.

While LYSO(Ce) is an ideal scintillator for PET due to its high density and fast decay time, its is not the only option. Crystals offer unique characteristics to suit a diverse range of applications and budgets.
